PBES MAP Scores and Continued Recovery

Mrs. Oberdorf’s slides

Reading recovery efforts include:

  • Consistent instruction at grade level;
  • Prioritizing grade-level skills and content; and
  • Ongoing progress monitoring with all students

MAP Reading Scores (Fall 2022):

3rd grade (n=191): Lo: 15%; LoAvg: 6%; Avg: 12%; HiAvg: 13%; Hi: 54%

4th grade (n=198): Lo: 16%; LoAvg: 9%; Avg: 12%; HiAvg: 16%; Hi: 47%

5th grade (n=212): Lo: 15%; LoAvg: 8%; Avg: 15%; HiAvg: 21%; Hi: 42%

Ms Oberdorf shared MAP-R data broken down by racial demographic, and can see that across all grade levels, the biggest learning opportunities are for African American/Black and Hispanic students.

To address these discrepancies, PBES is shifting to a structured literacy format, which means there is a greater balance of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension in reading instruction. These are based on the components of effective reading instruction to look at language comprehension and decoding together.

MAP Math Scores (Fall 2022)

3rd grade (n=191): Lo: 11%; LoAvg: 9%; Avg: 14%; HiAvg: 25%; Hi: 42%

4th grade (n=198): Lo: 12%; LoAvg: 24%; Avg: 15%; HiAvg: 21%; Hi: 38%

5th grade (n=212): Lo: 18%; LoAvg: 9%; Avg: 14%; HiAvg: 23%; Hi: 36%

Ms Oberdorf shared MAP-R data broken down by racial demographic, and opportunity gap is greatest for Hispanic and Black/African American students in math as well.

MAP is given across the board in winter and spring to monitor growth.

To address these discrepancies, PBES is focusing on high quality instruction with Eureka Math, which means:

  • Implement daily lesson with fidelity (all parts of the lesson): fluency, application problem, concept development, student debrief
  • Time-based, not task based. Have tendency to want kids to finish everything but this can hinder staying on track with grade level content
  • Hone the lesson: it’s a menu, not a script
  • Do the math before you plan and before you teach

Other tools to improve math instruction include

  • Utilize Equip, a pre-assessment tool that helps target for small groups
  • Small groups are flexible pending ongoing need

Other intervention tools include:

  • Kid Talks: identify students scoring in low/intensive support level; bring all instructional teachers and do a deep dive of the student; review multiple measures; determine intervention and next steps for each of these students
  • Co-teaching/co-planning for explicit instruction especially for English as a Second Language (ESL) and special education students. Students are not being pulled out of direct instruction but rather staying with class and interventionists co-teach and co-plan
  • Collecting Student/Community Voice, not justAcademic Data. Student, staff, and community data can help raise much more specific interventions for each student.
  • School wanted to start hearing from teachers, students, and community and what leads to student success. School conducted informal lunch bunches for targeted students who were not accessing grade-level content and formulated questions to ask each group. The school then conveyed parallel questions to staff during 1:1 interviews and small groups to identify barriers and inequities to combat. Community voice data via conducting community circles with parents, which have just started but finding information to be very beneficial

How can parents help build staff morale: Reach out and share gratitude to your teacher. Kind words and acknowledgement go a long way!

Parent Q: Can teachers teach math in Spanish?

A: PBES ESOL team is very supportive and works collaboratively and makes suggestions. In addition, paraeducators and other specialists use ELD lesson that is provided in the curriculum.

Parent Q: How are teachers at PBES being trained on structured literacy?

A: PBES Reading specialist reminds MCPS that not all schools are grades 3-5. He is diligent to receive the appropriate training, even when offered to only K-2 teachers, and members of his team also participate in trainings. They then train the teachers.

7:40     Introductions & Seeking Ideas:

  • NAACP Council Representative: Ingrid Gardiner (3 min.)
  • PBES Rep: Introduction. Focus is to get black parents to take a more proactive role. Current issue is around the anti-racist audit. This Thursday at 6:30pm, county committee will share information on anto-racist audit in case you want to join. Email: fitzgrid2014@gmail.com with questions
